While there are many donors and fundraisers of The Kids’ Cancer Project who have been directly affected by childhood cancer, there’s also a strong community of those who support the cause out of compassion, empathy, and a shared commitment to making a difference.
North Shore native, Michaela, is one of these people. The psychologist, who also runs a successful ASMR YouTube channel, will take on Sun Run 2025 later this week, all while raising funds for The Kids’ Cancer Project!
Michaela says the mere thought of having her own child diagnosed with childhood cancer was the catalyst for her fundraising journey.
“Since having my own baby, I just can’t even think about how horrific it would be to have your child diagnosed with cancer. I just want to try and help parents who have to experience that in any way I possibly can.”
“The research is what drew me to The Kids’ Cancer Project. Being a psychologist, research is my thing. I just find it so interesting!
“We should be funding research into minimising the number of sick kids – I’m all about prevention and treatment.”
Michaela’s fundraising efforts have caught the attention of many people within her community and has even received donations from old friends she hasn’t spoken to in years!
“So many people have said that it just feels like such a good cause to donate to. A girl I went to school who I haven’t spoken to for years sent me $100!
“Everybody I’ve spoken to, whether they have kids or not, feels that it’s just something that they want to support.”
As for the Sun Run itself, Michaela’s already exceeding her own expectations. She ran a half marathon ‘half a million years ago’ but is now back and better than ever.
“I feel ready. I originally thought that I'd love to do it in an hour, I thought that would be a miracle as I haven't run for so long, but the other day I ran it in 57 minutes, and I was so surprised! So now I’m aiming for between 55-57 minutes.”
